Getting to Know Me (again) [Nov. 25th, 2009|11:17 am]
[Tags|, ]
[Current Mood |accomplished]

Meme from [info]contrasedative

You know how sometimes people on your friends list post about stuff going on in their lives, and all of a sudden you think "Wait a minute! Since when were they working THERE? Since when were they dating THAT PERSON? Since when?" And then you wonder how you could have missed all that seemingly pretty standard information, but somehow you feel too ashamed to ask for clarification because it seems like info you should already know? It happens to all of us sometimes.

Please copy the topics below, erase my answers and put yours in their place, and then post it in your journal! Only if you want to, of course. Please elaborate on the questions that would benefit from elaboration. One-word answers seldom help anyone out.

Midsemester Break [Oct. 16th, 2009|05:38 pm]

[Current Mood | pleased]

Today, there's Green Forest. Tomorrow, there's Rocky Horror in Dormont. Sunday, maybe there's gaming?

And where does work fit into this whole schedule?

Yay for midsemester break and the fun times we fit into it. (This has worked pretty well on short notice considering I originally thought my midsemester break was next week.)

Relay For Life 2009 [Oct. 11th, 2009|02:07 pm]
[Tags|, , , ]
[Current Mood | exhausted]

Once again, I participated in Alpha Phi Omega's team for Relay For Life (you can get more info about the event at www.relayforlife.org/pacmu). This year, I beat my old record by walking 108 laps (27 miles) over the course of 9.5 hours. It was actually helpful to NOT take breaks, since breaks can cause your legs to feel stiffer and unwilling to start moving again. In fact, I won a trophy for walking the most laps that night, as well as earning a medal for being one of the first four people to get 75 laps.

I'm wondering if I should retire from this whole Relay business :-) I can actually tell this year that I've been getting stronger, and I'm pretty sure DDR/ITG is responsible.

I could've posted a more angsty kind of post about the start of classes and running into people returning all over again (though some of that has been pretty fun too). Instead, I'm putting up a picture that cracked me up:

Hookah [Aug. 11th, 2009|09:45 pm]

[Current Mood | amused]

Thanks to Molly and Connie, I have now tried hookah for the first time. It definitely wasn't as strong as I was expecting it to be; maybe tobacco is just a lot easier to deal with when all the dumb additives in cigarettes are gone. I found it amusing, but it isn't something I enjoyed enough to want to spend money on it again. I'm proud of myself for trying it, though.

There was a pillow fight in Schenley. I got tired by the end of it, but it was really awesome. There's also no better way to flirt with girls than to hit them with soft pillows in a big crowd :-)

Impromptu plans [Jul. 12th, 2009|02:59 am]

[Current Mood | exhausted]

There's been a long time without me updating. Although there has been stuff to update about, I don't really feel like posting it here. Let's just say the issue of my previous post got a little more complicated, but I see things working out.

Today, I started the day late. I played a whole lot of ITG, surprisingly making myself push despite being tired. I had a nice outing for dinner, and then I met up with people to go to Video Games Live.

Now, Video Games Live is a symphony performance of video game music. Getting there wasn't too bad by bus, and while waiting around with people before entering the theater, I was surprised to find how many different groups of people I recognized at the show (I wasn't really thrilled to see all of them, though). The performance itself was pretty cool, though I do wish some more pieces had been performed from Megaman and other old series.

After that, there was a nice dinner at this fancy restaurant at the same street corner, called the Six Penn Kitchen. That ended around midnight. Some of us went home by bus, and a few other adventurous folk including myself took a walking route back to CMU. By the time that was all done, I got home at 3am.

Sorry for the rushed explanations, but you should probably be used to that if you read my journal. Also, I'm not friends-locking this one, so I don't want to be way too personal. Lastly, thanks to people who made this day pretty awesome, including zsparks for organizing transit, chrisamaphone and william for suggesting dinner and a hike, and rlambert and gwillen for accompanying on the hike. I should really hang out with some of you people more often, but it never happens.

Anyone want to watch the Penguins game later tonight? I'd really like to catch this game, but I don't have a good enough TV, and company would be fun too. I'm more reachable by phone today.

EDIT: Oh man. I got to watch this on Donner's TV, and there was hardly anyone there. Awesome game to have seen. Thank you Penguins for a 6-2 victory, and thank you Laura for being awesome company.

Awesome semi-lazy day [May. 22nd, 2009|10:36 pm]

[Current Mood | amused]

As a reward for having gotten some really awesome book work done yesterday, I had a day where I spent until 5pm relaxing at home (playing SNES and some other stuff), and then I played ITG on campus pretty much from 6pm to 10pm (with other people taking turns too, giving all of us more breaks). These kinds of days can be pretty awesome.

End of the Grading! [Apr. 29th, 2009|07:23 pm]

[Current Mood | relieved]

Finally, with the exception of my students' final exams, grading is done for the semester! This makes me inordinately relieved.

Also, it's very odd when you (where, by "you", I really mean "I") write a textbook section where the HW exercises take up as much room as the material of the section itself. This is going to be interesting to discuss with my advisor tomorrow ;-)

New iPhone! [Mar. 4th, 2009|08:40 pm]

[Current Mood | amused]

My parents switched over phone carriers to AT & T, so as a result, they had me go get a new iPhone! I got the phone yesterday, though today is probably the first day I figured out how to do much of anything with it. I'm not crazy about a couple things (like how much harder it is for me to type messages without actual buttons), but certain things are much better (photo quality).

I've heard that old phones can be recycled. Does anyone know how to go about this? I do know where I can recycle the battery, but I don't know if there's someone who would appreciate a whole phone. Wasn't there some sort of program to send deactivated phones to troops?

A short jury duty story [Jan. 14th, 2009|02:25 pm]

[Current Mood | relieved]

I had jury duty today. I got to the court alright, got to sit back and wait for a bit, then I was called in to hear some details over a case. Right after that was a lunch break (I went to Soup Man... awesome place). The case was settled during lunchtime, and I got to leave.

Yay!

Minor Internet Panic [Jan. 13th, 2009|08:13 pm]

[Current Mood | cranky]

Today, I wake up and find that while my router looks like it's working, and I'm getting signal, I'm completely unable to connect to the internet. This situation persists tonight, and I get really worried. This is because I have jury duty tomorrow, and I need to get directions to the courthouse.

It turned out I just had to unplug the modem for some time and plug it back in, letting it power-cycle. Grrr.

Still not an ECE [Dec. 29th, 2008|11:41 am]
I figured I'd just make a small post about something amusing that happened this break. I've traveled back to New York for a small family holiday party (I'm in New York from the 28th to the 30th), and as I'm staying with my grandma, I end up usually helping with a couple computer tasks.

This time, my grandma and I also went over to see her friend, who was having issues with a remote control. Even though the batteries were in good condition, the remote wasn't doing anything. Upon looking at the batteries, I ended up noticing a brown, rust-like area on one of the connections. I got a tiny metal pick and scraped away at the dirt/rust/whatever it was, and after cleaning up that area, the remote worked!

This is, by far, the best technical achievement I've ever done in terms of actual hardware. :-)

Jokes [Dec. 17th, 2008|07:16 pm]

[Current Mood | amused]

You know what can cheer a person up from a boring day?

A dirty joke book!

I got this on a whim when going with my friend to Barnes and Noble. It's "The Little Black Book of Dirty Jokes", and it was only $10. It's definitely worth it so far... if anyone wants a joke messaged to them, I'll give you a couple.

One teaser (not the best, but probably one of the cleverest short jokes I've heard recently):
"A guy was asked why he married a sadist. He replied: 'Beats me!'"

Today, I passed the 35-minute long song on the ITG machine: Ayu Trance 2 (it's really more like an album). It was surprisingly easy, just LOOOONG.
